- FLYING BRANTGeorge William McLellan
FLYING BRANTGeorge William McLellan (1897-1987)
Eureka, CA, c. 1941
24 in. long, 41 in. wingspan
One of only nine flying decoys originally created for this legendary rig. Few would argue that Bill McLellan’s famous rig of brant are the finest flyer decoys ever created. This rig was meticulously constructed in 1941 with the assistance of his wife, Olga (1902-1980). McLellan only used the carefully protected patterns about a dozen times over the next twenty years. Since then these peerless birds have been highly celebrated and prized by collectors, authors, and curators from coast to coast.
In 1989 Richard Wheeler wrote a feature article for "Decoy Magazine" entitled “Bill McLellan’s wonderful flying brant,” discussing not only the rig, but his and Dorothy’s experiences with McLellan a half a century ago and how they obtained this intricately swirl-painted decoy number “8.” When the Wheelers arrived, the carver still had eight of the original nine, though one had “ruined body paint” from a friend’s attempt to mold it, bringing the rig to only seven fine examples in original paint. While Wheeler was not able to acquire this flyer on that occasion, he was highly motivated and soon made arrangements to obtain "number 8.”
The same year Wheeler published his story, West Coast decoy authorities, Michael Miller and Frederick Hanson illustrated this exact decoy, describing these famous flyers as “masterpieces of precision” in their book “Wildfowl Decoys of the Pacific Coast: Carving Traditions of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California.” McLellan, even during his lifetime, recognized the important value of these decoys “for he made a special box for them that contained separate compartments for wings, pins, dowel, bodies, etc.” The authors continue, “The redwood bodies, measuring about 24 inches in length, were fashioned from old telephone poles found in the alley behind his home. Bill created nicely detailed patterns to trace the top and side views on the redwood blocks before he started carving. Unlike the floaters, Bill did not equip these flyers with bills made of hardwood doweling. The wings were constructed in much the same manner as those on good model airplanes. McLellan used fine spruce for the frames, after first designing and preparing explicit patterns. When the frames were completed, stiff butcher paper was laid on followed by muslin. The fabric was then coated with airplane dope. The wing patterns were taken from the tracing of an actual brant wing – ‘a big fella’ according to McLellan. Each of the nine flying brant was numbered on the body and matching wings. The latter fit into the bodies with intricate, brass wing-locking mechanisms that allow quick removal or attachment. The wing-lock is hinged to allow the wings, rigged with heavy rubber bands, to waver in the wind. A copper pin secures the wings to the hinges. The flyers were deployed by means of telescoping 2-piece galvanized steel poles. Each of the nine poles, with each decoy at a different height, was attached to a floating wooden frame that was pulled over the sand into the water as the tide rose and fell.”
McLellan did not stop with the form and construction, as the paint is perhaps the finest seen on any Pacific brant. Both the top and bottom sides of the stretched canvas wings are finished with excellent feathering. This decoy is particularly notable within the rig for its strong swirl paint towards the tail.
The Wheelers also acquired McLellan’s incredible patterns which further confirm that this is perhaps the most intricately made rig of decoys ever constructed. The bird’s refinement and function would have made an unrivaled sight on the choppy waters of Humboldt Bay. Indeed, McLellan recounted that on multiple occasions this vexed other hunters. Today, thanks to the Wheelers and other specialists, we have a robust understanding of this extraordinary rig.
“Supplementing the many floating brant decoys, McLellan made nine extraordinary flying brant decoys that are brilliant innovative achievements in artistry, workmanship, and construction.” — Michael Miller, “Wildfowl Decoys of California,” 2015
“The McLellan flying brant fit the criterion of masterful decoys.” — Gerald M. Rosenthal, “The Great Book of Waterfowl Decoys,” 1990

Of the Fate series, Charlesworth explained, "I've always been interested in transitional spaces like corridors, waiting rooms, elevators, alleys and highways, as well as the interiors of cars and airplanes. The things that are meant to happen in those spaces are also transitional, or could be thought of as non-events. The imagery of Fate invites a wider narrative interpretation than Trouble. As in the previous series, scenarios are isolated from each other, photograph-to-photograph. The man in the black suit is as much a perpetrator as a victim of circumstance. He falls backward into a hallway, watches a volcano erupt, reads the want ads, climbs through debris and has a drunken vision of pink cartoon rabbits."

Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Jenny Classic Collection Series stamp issued July 19, 1997.
The end of World War I made thousands of war-surplus airplanes available at bargain prices -- and there were just as many war-trained pilots who wanted to continue flying. At San Diego's Rockwell Field, in 1919, a permanent forest fire patrol was established, equipped with surplus Curtiss Jennies. During the 1920s, the reliable biplane was also a favorite of barnstormers. These daring pilots flew around the country giving stunt flying exhibitions at county fairs and carnivals. In 1924 the Curtiss Exhibition Company flew 100,000 miles -- much of it in Jennies -- conducting aerial photography, carrying passengers, making deliveries and instructing new pilots.

CHARLES KNOTEK (1933-2008) AIRSHIP FLGIHT ORIGINALCharles A Knotek (American, 1933 - 2008) "First Airship Flight Around the World" Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Signed lower middle.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the Man's Conquest of the Heavens series issued in 1983.
After World War I the first dirigible airship Germany was allowed to build for her own use was the Graf Zeppelin. Her commander, Dr. Hugo Eckener, set out at once to prove her superior worth as well as the feasibility and comfort of long-distance travel in the huge airships. His chosen method of proof: a trip around the world. At that time, the feat had been accomplished only once, by two American Army airplanes making 72 stops over a 6 month period. To finance his voyage, Eckener gleaned the profits from the sale of thousands of commemorative postage stamps; charged passengers a fee of $2500 each; and got the backing of publishers. One of them, William Randolph Hearst, contributed one hundred thousand dollars, with the stipulation that the flight begin and end on American soil. Thus, the Graf Zeppeling began its amazing journey from Lakehurst, New Jersey. Traveling at an average speed of 70 mph, 20 passengers and 41 crewmen dined on gourmet foods and fine wines as they drifted above the barren wilderness of such places as Russia and Siberia, passing over many lands never seen by people from the air before. In a total of twelve days in the air, the Zeppelin covered 20,500 miles, landing once again in Lakehurst on August 29th. A fabulous tickertape parade up Broadway in New York greeted the passengers and crew, and praise came from many sources including the new American President, Herbert Hoover. Dr. Eckener had made his point and the age of the great airships began anew.

- JOHN COLLINS PHOTO - EXHIBITED AT 1933
JOHN COLLINS PHOTO - EXHIBITED AT 1933 WORLD'S FAIRJohn F. Collins (American, 1888-1990). Bromoil gelatin silver print photograph, 1927. A striking "Machine Age" photograph of an adding machine by John F. Collins that was exhibited in the International Photographic Salon at the 1933 A Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago. In this work, Collins took an everyday object and transformed it to a work of modern art by focusing on shapes and sharp contrasts between light and dark in his photograph. Collins' magical use of light created a marvelous shadow beyond the adding machine, presenting an elegant silhouette. Throughout the 1920s, Collins used avant-garde photography to zoom in on modern tools of technology with a studio camera of his own design that he called Big Bertha, oftentimes creating a sacred visual aura to elevate everyday objects as we see in this photo. Size of photo: 10.875" L x 13.875" W (27.6 cm x 35.2 cm) Size of matte: 15.25" L x 16.25" W (38.7 cm x 41.3 cm)
John F. Collins was part of the first generation of 20th century American photographers - along with Edward Steichen, Charles Sheeler, and others - who employed avant-garde ideas into their commercial work and saw no distinction between fine and applied photography, much like the Bauhaus and Constructivist photographers in Europe. His creations reflected the Machine Age when modernists paid homage to America's glistening man-made environment and mechanical forms - everything from streamlined automobiles, airplanes and locomotives to skyscrapers and bridges and yes, even seemingly ordinary objects like typewriters and adding machines! What's more, this piece was exhibited at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, and technological innovation was the theme of the fair. Its motto was "Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Adapts", conveying the idea that science and American life were intertwined.
"Collins's work was usually simple, elegant, refined in conception and highly dramatic. The pictures emphasized Cubist flattened space, overlapping planes of light, vigorous and subtle tones and textures, to accentuate boldly the forms of the objects, which were treated as abstract shapes. Collins's powerful graphic images called attention to the uniqueness of each object, emphasizing 'the thing itself.' This was the core and heart of avant-garde photography of the 1920s." ("John F. Collins Photographs 1904-1946" Photofind Gallery Inc. 1987)
This photograph once belonged to pioneering collector and patron of the arts, Ginny Williams. Sotheby's hosted a series of auctions featuring art and photography in the Ginny Williams Collection in June and July of 2020. Their press release began as follows, "Born in rural Virginia in 1927, Ginny moved to Denver, Colorado in the late 1950s with her husband, Carl Williams. An avid photographer herself, who studied with Austrian-American photojournalist and photographer Ernst Haas, her collecting journey began with classical figurative photography. Her passion and keen eye eventually prompted her to open her namesake gallery in Denver in the 1980s. While her passion for photography never waned, remaining a primary focus of both her gallery and private collection, her voracious curiosity quickly widened her curatorial focus. Over time, Ginny became increasingly courageous and experimental in her selections, venturing into Abstract Expressionism and Contemporary Art and following her artists themselves through gallery shows and museum exhibitions. As the years passed, Ginny became as much of a trailblazer as the artists she collected."
