IVAN AIVAZOVSKY (RUSSIA, 1817-1900) "After the Storm", oil on canvas, signed lower right, depicting a crew in the longboat escaping their foundering savaged ship in a very rough sea, but with a schism in the clouds revealing golden light, representing hope; the painting housed in a substantial, magnificent deep cove many ranked gilt gesso frame, OS: 29" x 40", SS: 13 1/2" x 24 1/2". Cleaned and revarnished, repaired puncture just above the longboat, reinforced canvas edge on original stretcher, some loss to frame.
Aivazovsky (born Hovhannes Aivazian, an Armenian from the Crimea) rose from poverty to be one of the wealthiest and most prolific artists of the Romantic Movement worldwide. He spent most of his life based in his home town, the Black Sea Port of Feodosia, but traveled constantly, and after training at the St Petersburg Academy of the Arts, built his reputation and wealth on commissions from the Russian Navy and the Sultans of the Ottoman Empire.
