1901 TX CONFEDERATE SURGEON BOOK, ALAMO WATERCOLORSGrouping of late 19th/early 20th century Texas items including a 1901 Confederate Surgeon Book and six folk art watercolors of San Antonio including Alamo. 1st item - Large leather bound journal with title, "Surgeon's Case Book. Texas Confederate Home". Provides great detail into various medical maladies the Confederate veterans in this facility were encountering in later age. An entry example includes one for J. M. Stalcup, admitted 1891 (born 1839). "Disability from gunshot wounds received in battle. Furloughed to Bryan Texas on June 26, 1902, Reunion Hoods Brig - Returned on June 28, 1902." Note - a Jasper M. Stalcup is listed in the 1st Texas Volunteer Infantry, Co. G and was listed as wounded at Chickamauga and wounded and disabled at the Battle of the Wilderness. Entries for approximately 280 Texas Confederate veterans. (From the Texas State Historical Association) - The Texas Confederate Home in Austin began as a project of the John B. Hood Camp of United Confederate Veterans, which obtained a charter from the state on November 28, 1884. The camp's main purpose was to establish a home for disabled and indigent Confederate veterans. 16" x 17 1/4". 2nd grouping - grouping of six (6) cabinet card size watercolors of San Antonio scenes depicting rural life with inscriptions verso. Includes a watercolor of the Alamo with inscription on back, "Founded May 1744, Assaulted March 1836 San Antonio Texas". Other scenes include a Tamale stand, Mexican Jacals, and Cowboys. 4 1/4" x 5 1/4" card size. Late 19th/early 20th century. Provenance: Private Arkansas collection.
Condition:
1st item - book spine detached, cover corners with losses, a few interior pages detached. 2nd grouping - broken corners and edges on cabinet cards, Mexican Jacal scene with tear, corner loss to burro boy watercolor.
