Literature: See Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Massachusetts, by Ellery Bicknell Crane, 1907, Worcester County, Massachusetts, pp. 39-40. Albert Brown, the son of Samuel and Ada (Hardy) Brown, was born at Seekonk, Massachusetts, March 20, 1804, and married, Mary Blair Eaton, in 1828, and together had eleven children. Albert was a tailor and opened a shop with his brother William, "W. & A. Brown," the first clothing store in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Main Street. Albert died in 1854. Edwin was born in 1844, served as a bank teller and in the Civil War, and later went into business manufacturing machine card clothing for cotton and woolen mills.
Both portraits are in very good condition. The daguerreotypes all have a dark halo around the edges.

Ernest Albert Land, Canadian, (1918-2006) By Candlelight, Oil on masonite Biography from the Archives of askART: Biography from Butler Institute of American Art Ernest Albert Land was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His family moved to New York City when he was three years old, and by the time he was nine, he had already decided on his life's work. His enormous natural talent pointed into the direction all his schooling was to take, until interrupted by World War II. During his military service in which he served as an ensign, he traveled extensively to most countries of the world. This included two secret expeditions to the North Pole in 1941, the Invasion of Casa Blanca, the invasion of Cherburgh and the invasion at Normandy Beach. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to his easel and the task of making his place in the art world. His first painting in the realistic vein was accepted by Grand Central Galleries in New York City. It received recognition by the art critics and led to his life membership in that gallery. His first solo show in New York in 1954 was soon followed up by many more throughout the country. Many of his works have been reproduced in Switzerland and distributed throughout the United States. Mr. and Mrs. Land now live in Falls Church, Virginia, where he has his studio. He is painting full time. Mr. Land is dedicated to the techniques of the early masters. Like the artists of the past who depicted the seeable, touchable world of their time, here is a contemporary artist, highlighting the essence and uniqueness of our times. Today is a world of 'break-throughs,' with new horizons opening upon an ever expanding future. He asks : what are we breaking through to?, what do these new horizons reveal? His paintings, highlighting an imagery strange and magical, reflect the deepest realities of our time. He expresses a balance of the old and the new and the eternal in the new. Through his eyes, our times are not only a confusion and an upheaval, but also a revolution and a revelation. His techniques uf super realism and trompe l'oeil, greatly enhance his rendition of the strangeness of our time, where reality seems to exist beyond the third dimension. Yet with all his seriousness his work has a light and whimsical touch as if to say : where to now little man? HIs work is included in the collections of Kress, French Co., American Telephone and Telegraph, IBM, Boston College, Grumbacher, Lederle Laboratories, Andrew Mellon, Coca Cola, Co. , Equitable Life Assurance, Aldophe Menjou, Hildegarde, Steinway Co., and Serge Rubenstein. Gustav Muss-Arnolt (1858-1927)Two Setters, 1901 signed and dated "G. Muss-Arnolt. p. 1901" lower right oil on canvas, 24 by 36 in.This painting depicting two setters in the field was commissioned in 1901 by Samuel Henry Vandergrift. Samuel, born in 1866 in Oil City, Pennsylvania, was the son of Captain Jacob J. Vandergrift, an American industrialist who rose from cabin boy to oil industry tycoon. Historian John T. Flynn writes, "After the war he moved to Oil City, drilled for oil, and built a refinery. He was a pipe line pioneer, building a four-mile carrier_which by additions and extensions was one day to expand into that far-flung tangle of pipes owned by the Standard. Captain Vandergrift was the Vice President of the National Refiners' Association to John D. Rockefeller's President, and his cooperation was key to forming Standard Oil. Among other pursuits, J.J. was also a principle investor in the Apollo Iron and Steel Company. A planned community for his workers, Vandergrift, PA, bears his name. Samuel entered the family oil and banking businesses, including Apollo, the Pittsburgh Trust Company and Keystone Bank, among others. He managed the family estate and pursued his gentlemanly hobbies of yachting, shooting, fishing, and power boat racing. He was a member of the American Ornithologists' Union, and in 1903 he won the Herron Hill Gun Club Championship. Vandergrift entered his setter, David Copperfield, in the all-ages stakes of the Monongahela Club's field trial in 1898, with the dog, "ranging and hunting in a stylish and merry way, which produced favorable impressions as to his work_After over an hour's trial they were ordered up. He was on the board as a founding member of the Duquesne Kennel Club and was also an active member of the New York Yacht Club, the Thousand Islands Yacht Club, and the Nittany Rod & Gun Club. In the same year the painting was created, Vandergrift bought land on Grindstone Island, part of the Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River. His palatial summer home was located at Long Rock. He was active in the development of the Thousand Islands, serving as a donor and a director of the Thousand Island Park Golf Course. Vandergrift died in 1930. Vancroft Kennel was a highly decorated, prize-winning operation run by Vandergrift's brother Joseph. In 1902, the New York Times reported, "Vandergrift, also of Pittsburg, owner of the Van Croft Kennels, swept everything before him in the English setter classes, the leader being Champion Barton Tory, pronounced by Eastern judges at the New York show to be the finest type of English setter in the world. The kennel imported setters from abroad in the early 1900s, including "Queen's Place Pride and "Queen's Pride.Gustav Muss-Arnolt specialized in the depiction of hunters and their dogs. He worked as a judge in dog shows, served on the board of the American Kennel Club from 1906-1909, and demonstrated an incredible knowledge of a variety of sporting breeds in his paintings. Throughout his career, Muss-Arnolt's illustrations were published in many magazines such as "Harper's Weekly" and the "American Kennel Club Gazette.Provenenace: Samuel Henry Vandergift By descent to the present owner Literature: "Monongahela Club's Trials, Forest and Stream, December 3, 1898, Volume 51, p. 455. Crile is an exemplary artist striving to bring the vocabulary of early modernist abstraction into the contemporary context. Often reviewed in periodicals and catalogues by art critics, curators and art historians, Crile is noted for her disturbing and evocative abstracts. Vaguely geometric, planetary and aeronautical shapes and patterns are rendered in thin veils of saturated color often used in eccentric combinations. Imagery shifts from geometric to biomorphic fields. Crile's concern for spatial complexity is magnified by stretching and compressing planar forms into dynamic compositions that challenge the viewer's perception of space and time. pastel on paper Dimensions: 30"H x 22"W (image) 37 1/2"H x 29"W (frame)

23cm x 31cm (9in x 12in)
Note:Arthur Fanshawe was born in 1794 the third and youngest son of Captain Robert Fanshawe, Resident Commissioner of Plymouth Dockyard. Fanshawe joined the Navy aged 10 and was made Captain by the time he was 22. After a rapid rise through the ranks and time spent in the Eastern Mediterranean, off West Africa and in North America and the West Indies Fanshawe was made Vice-Admiral in 1857 and from 1858 to 1860 he was Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet in the Flagship Marlborough. In 1860 Fanshawe returned to Britain as Commander-in-Chief at Devonport. He was made Admiral in 1862 and died in 1864 aged 70 after 60 years in the Navy.
The donor of the painting was probably Biagio Tagliaferro, one of the principal merchants in Malta and President of The Malta Bank, although Giacinto Tagliaferro who owned a Maritime Insurance Company remains a possibilty.
