The Aldine Edition with memoir by John Dennis. Only 150 copies had been printed, of which 25 copies for America; this is copy No. 8 of American Edition. Vol i Illustrated with an engraved portrait of Sir Walter Scott with tissue guard. Top edge gilt; others deckeled edges. 3/4 red leather with marbled boards and linings end papers, gilt tooled spines with 5 raised bands. All like bound.

Color lithograph portraying the little-known clown-magician Aldow wearing a devilish grin, grasping a smoking stovepipe. An oval vignette depicts him with an assistant performing parlor magic. The Eiffel Tower appears in the lower right. A vaudeville agent returning to New York after a trip to Paris described Aldow in the Evening Sun (9 July 1890) as "an electric clown and pastel painter." Linen backed. Minor over-coloring at folds, minor restored tears. 34 _ x 48". Very good.
