ANGUS TRUDEAU (1907-1984)
ANGUS TRUDEAU (1907-1984) WIKWEMIKONGA watercolour by Angus Trudeau (1907-1984) entitled "Wikwemikong" having a large clapboard house with a mansard roof in the foreground and a stone church and schoolhouse in the background. Typical of Trudeau's works, the name "Wikwemikong" is painted with the use of a stencil in the upper left. Trudeau, of the Odawa First Nation, worked on the Great Lakes and eventually retired to Manitoulin Island where he began painting ships he worked on as well as local scenes, often with titles at the top cut from newspapers or painted with the aid of a stencil. Works by Angus Trudeau can be found in major public and private collections including the Canadian Museum of History, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Mixed media on board, with Isaacs Gallery label on the back. Ontario, 1975. Allio Collection. Collection Allio. 15" x 19".

The duality of upper and lower worlds is likewise ubiquitous and particularly well developed among Algonquian-speaking groups such as the Menominee, whose hierarchical system has been described by Skinner (1921: 29-31). Among the latter, the most powerful upper world being the sun, followed by the Thunderbirds, and the chief of the underworld was a Great White Bear with a long copper tail, followed by the great Underground Panther and Horned Hairy Serpent (Fox: 2004: 283).
