PAIR WORCESTER ABOLITIONIST PLATTERS, HERBERT FAMILYPair of large Chamberlains Worcester anti-slavery style burgundy and parcel-gilt decorated porcelain platters with scalloped edges and central portrait of a black man surrounded by a banner with Herbert family motto ASGRE LAN DIOGEL EL PHERCHEN ("A good conscience is the best shield"). Unmarked. 17 3/8" H x 20 1/4" W. United Kingdom, first half of 19th century. Note: The Herbert family commissioned this porcelain tableware set to celebrate Great Britain's passing of the Slavery Act of 1833, utilizing their morally reputable motto as a critique of slavery.
