Nicolaus Baur (Bauer) (German 1816-1879) Racing Amazons (Jagende Amazonen). Oil on cradled wood panel signed in red to the left of center along the lower edge framed in a massive gilt frame overall 37" x 47-1/2". Interesting narrative with women and dogs hunting a stag; to the left of the composition one of the dogs has brought two male figures to earth. They appear to be satyrs who are often described as accompanying the hunters in myths.

This drawing likely dates to Gericault's British period circa 1821. The Amazone drawing relates to a full scale watercolor of the same subject in the Museum Boymans van Beuningen Rotterdam and a painting of A Woman on Horseback formerly in the Jean Stern collection. "FLORES DO AMAZONAS" ELEPHANT FOLIO, MEEFLORES DO AMAZONAS or Flowers of the Amazon, 1980, elephant folio by Margaret Mee consisting of 24 color plates, each having facing page with descriptions in both English and Portuguese and tissue guard. Plates are from Mee's original paintings. Preface by Roberto Burle Marx with an introduction by Richard Evans Schultes. Housed in a green cloth binding with gilt lettering and green cloth slipcase. 25 3/4" H x 19" W. Provenance: Former collection of Senator Howard Baker of TN. This portfolio was presented to Senator Baker from Joao Camilo Penna, Minister of Industry and Commerce in Brazil. Card from the Minister paper clipped to front page. Condition:
Some fading and stains to case, wear to edges and overall grime. Slight staining to front cover and to a couple of front pages. Plates overall excellent condition.

This likely portrays the version of the adventure of Theseus with Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons, as being abducted, who is the central figure in the plate. Hercules is seen around the perimeter with his Nemean lion cloak in the heat of battle. Rim decorated with floral vines and classical masks.
