Charles Wellington Boyle
Charles Wellington Boyle (American/Louisiana 1861-1925) "Bayou Boeuf Louisiana" oil on canvas signed lower left 16 1/4 in. x 24 1/4 in. in an ornate frame with artist and title label. Provenance: Purchased in the French Quarter in the 1940s; thence by descent to the present collector. Note: Charles Wellington Boyle (1861-1925) was raised in Lewisburg LA on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. He was active in New Orleans art circles from 1883 as a painter art teacher restorer and curator. His Louisiana landscapes are his best works and often prominently feature moss-laden live oak trees. The painterly view of Bayou Boeuf offered here depicts a wide canopy of these trees along the edge of the bayou where a man plies the water in a pirogue. Many Louisiana landscapes by a variety of 19th century artists are unidentified. It is unusual to have a specific location noted on this Boyle landscape. Bayou Boeuf is located in Lafourche Parish in the "German" territories of Southeast Louisiana just off Lac des Allemands near Kraemer.
