Ranging in height from 9" - 10" H. Early 20th century. 2nd grouping - Four souvenir wired bales of cotton, the two larger bales having tags from Lubbock, TX and Brownfield, TX. Length ranging 3 3/4" to 5". Early to Mid 20th century. Provenance - Greene Museum, Phenix City, AL.

All dolls appear to be 2nd or 3rd quarter 20th century except the Qing opera doll (circa 1900) and the Peggy Nisbet dolls (last quarter 20th c.). Sizes 4" to 13". NATIVE AMERICAN DOLL CRADLE & AWL CASE1st item: Native American, possibly Crow, leather doll cradle having flared head board with beaded bands at top. Thread sewn and beaded overlay on cradle cover, hood with weavers and fringed on back. 12 3/4" H x 6 1/2" at widest point. 2nd item: Stitched awl case, possibly Crow, comprised of rawhide and beaded in yellow, red, cobalt with beaded flap and leather strap. 8 1/4" H x 3/4" W. Late 19th century. Provenance: Property from the estate of Dorothy Louise Luhrs, PhD, (1910-1972), Archaeologist with University of New Mexico/School of American Research Field School, whose studies and research included the Una Via Chaco Canyon, NM, Largo Canyon, NM, Guatemala, Mexico, and the Hoopa Indian Reservation in northern California. 1st item: Cradleboard is in good condition and shows expected wear with minor loss of beads to top right edge of board. Minor loss to leather on right side of cradle cap or cover. "Crow" written en verso of board. 2nd item: Awl case is in good condition with minor bead loss on flap. General overall wear commensurate with age and use.

HELEN BULLARD FOLK ART NATIVITY SET, 11 PCS.Helen Bullard Kreckniak (1902-1996, Ozone, Tennessee, working 1949-1982) folk art carved Nativity Set, 11 pieces, including Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, 3 wise men, a shepherd boy, 2 sheep, and manger. Also includes donkey initialed J.H.. Set won 1st Prize at the 1955 United Federation of Doll Clubs 6th Annual Exhibition and 2nd place at the 1959 United Federation of Doll Clubs, 10th Annual Exhibition. Dolls range in size from 4 1/4" H to 12 1/4" H. Biography: Mrs. Bullard carved wooden dolls by hand under the name "Holly Dolls". She served as President of the Federation of Doll Clubs and was Founder and President of the National Institute of American Doll Artists (NIADA); she also served as editor of the magazines of both these organizations. She authored Crafts and Craftsmen of Tennessee Mountains, American Doll Artists, American Doll Artists Volume II, Faith Wick, the Artist and Her Dolls, Dorothy Heizer, the Artists and Her Dolls, My People in Wood, and the update of the Cumberland County book. Pottery includes 4 small acomas - a 3 1/2" H black and white jar signed Mary Ann Hampton, a 2 1/2" H redware jar signed SWT Navajo; a 2 1/2" H three color jar signed B.R., and a 1 5/8" H jar signed H. Pino. There are also four small low bowls or dishes, 2" diam and smaller, signed Acomo D. Reano, and a 1" H oval container of bone with animal decoration signed PEM. Dolls include three 3" H papoose dolls sewn to a carrying board with handle, attributed to Peru (fraying to bottom of one doll); a 9 1/2" H Native American doll with beaded face and leather clothing (part of hair may be missing); an African American farmer doll with carved nut face and cotton hair, 10" H; and a doll with painted wood face, wood arms, and gingham dress, 7 1/2" L. Condition:
All pottery in good condition with some light wear. Indian doll has significant wear to leather arms and legs, part of hair missing. Female doll has some tears to clothing at arms and general wear. Farmer doll - stains to back from having been glued to something.

19TH C. AFRICAN AMERICAN DOLL PRINTED FACE HUMAN HAIRUnited States, late 1800s to early 1920s. A handmade, cloth doll representing a young African-American boy with a realistic visage presenting a sweet expression, crowned by natural, curly hair - as well as a firmly stuffed body with long black limbs that move freely. He wears a white cotton shirt of a 19th century style as well as a red band and a strand of black and white glass beads with several danglers around his neck. Note that the face was printed on cloth, a practice that dates the doll from the late 1800s to the early 1920s. It is quite rare to find an example like this! A very special piece of American folk art and history. Size: 15.125" H (38.4 cm)

NATIVE AMERICAN DOLL W/ BEADS & BANDOLIER BAG , 1930SSouthwest US, New Mexico, probably Zuni or Navajo, ca. 1930s. A handmade doll representing a Native American brave, skillfully constructed of muslin and dressed in traditional garments including a tunic with cut tin and turquoise glass bead 'buttons' down the front, split Spanish trousers with revealed red tassels hanging from the knees to the ankles , and felt boots adorned by metallic buttons. The brave is also decorated with 'turquoise' earrings; a multistrand necklace comprised of red and turquoise glass beads; a belt comprised of red, white, blue, black, and white glass beads featuring bird, arrow, and tipi motifs as well as the inscription "H2+NM" (NM presumably for New Mexico) at one end; a bandolier bag and strap trimmed with cut tin ornaments that are further adorned by turquoise glass beads; and a red fabric headband. Finally, the doll's visage presents with embroidered facial features and is crowned by a full head of black 'hair'. A very special example. Size: 23.25" H (59.1 cm)

Condition:
Expected age wear with normal tears and stains to clothing and a few losses to metallic buttons on boots, red tassels, and beads adorning bandolier strap. Still, a very nice example and the "H2+ NM" inscription on the beaded belt is interesting as well.
