Clara Barton ALsS Lot of 2 ALsS from Clara Barton (1821-1912) teacher nurse and humanitarian who founded the American Red Cross in 1881. ALS from Clara 4pp Washington D.C. Feb. 23 1874. Addressed to Samuel R. Barton regarding her activities in Washington D.C. In part: ...things move slow in this city...I have not yet got the Brief from Genl. Murray...I have prepared a letter to Genl. Butler in which I detail the circumstances of the last ten years. She also discusses an exchange with Judge Lawrence of Ohio who was Chairman of the Committee on War Claims during which she joked with him that she was going to unmask a lottery. She also describes Washington stating: It has changed since the days when the mules used to drown in the streets. ALS from Clara Barton 4pp Oxford (MA). June 2 1908. Addressed to to colleagues Roscoe and Mary regarding Memorial Day and GAR activities. Clara describes her activities as follows: I am in the midst of...''Memorial or Decoration Week'' - It is ''G.A.R. Week'' - It is ''D.A.R. Week''...I rode all Memorial Day in the Procession...Sat on the stage Sunday Evening for the Address. The only woman in all this - and must meet them tonight...as a regular G.A.R. member...The D.A.R.s are also a combination and I had to accept honorary membership... Condition: Both letters boldly penned. 1874 ALS has been inlaid and silked for preservation; with some light soiling.
