An Ammonite Specimen Morocco A
An Ammonite Specimen Morocco A mineral fossil of an extinct species highly polished on front and edge apprx. 6" x 5" x 1". Ammonites are an extinct group of marine invertebrate animals. These molluscs are more closely related to living species such as octopuses squid and cuttlefish than they are to shelled nautiloids such as the living Nautilus species even though their fossil appearance may suggest otherwise.

Polished ammonite seabed fossils in
Polished ammonite seabed fossils in natural Moroccan upright sculptural stone slab. Ammonites are extinct members of the Cephalopod class. Modern members include nautilus squid and octopus. They first appeared during the Silurian Period (435 million to 410 million years ago) and were abundant and widespread in the seas of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (175 million to 65 million years ago). Ammonites are important index fossils. They often link the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods. This is a carved and polished Moroccan fossil plaque. It is essentially huge piece of rock pulled from a dry seabed and then hand polished. 25 1/2"H x 21"W.
