Benson was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician, who represented New York State in the Continental Congress, Annapolis Convention, and United States House of Representatives. He served as a member of the New York constitutional convention in 1788 which ratified the United States Constitution. He also served as the first attorney general of New York, chief justice of the New York Supreme Court, and as the chief United States circuit judge of the United States circuit court for the Second Circuit.

CONFEDERATE NAVY ARCHIVE OF LT. DABNEY SCALES IN EUROPE...Civil War archive of Confederate Navy Lieutenant Dabney Scales including an 1863 journal detailing Dabney Scales assignment in Europe (approx. 250 pages), Scale's 1860 U.S. Practice Ship "Plymouth" log journal (188 pages), and a Scales family post-War accounting journal spanning from 1871-1882 in Memphis, TN. Biography of Dabney Scales - Dabney Minor Scales (1841-1920) of Memphis, TN was the son of Peter Scales, a planter from Virginia. Dabney attended the US Naval Academy and joined the Confederate Navy at the outbreak of the Civil War. He served on the CSS Savannah, CSS Capital, CSS Arkansas, CSS Atlanta, and the CSS Shenandoah. In 1863-4, Scales was assigned to Europe and spent time in London and Paris regarding the outfitting and manning of Confederate ships constructed in England. After the Civil War, Dabney Scales lived in Mexico a short period before returning to Memphis to practice law. Dabney was elected to the Tennessee legislature and served in the Tennessee State Senate. In the Spanish-American War, he served as a lieutenant during the conflict. 1st item - 1863 journal detailing Dabney Scales's assignment in Europe (approx. 250 pages) beginning April 24th, 1863 on Iron Clad "Atlanta" off Fort Jackson near Savannah, GA and concludes on March 26, 1864 in Paris, France. Highlights from this extensive diary include running the blockade of Charleston on the steamer, "Ella and Anna". Scales writes of their voyage to Nassau, Havana, St. Thomas, and finally to Southhampton, England. Upon arriving in Paris with fellow officers of the Confederate Navy, he reviews his days "sight seeing" in the Paris environs while also commenting on the war news from home. There is considerable discussion about the CSS Florida at Brest and Scales has communications with some of the Florida officers by person or written correspondence through other shipmates. 2nd item - Dabney Scale's 1860 U.S. Practice Ship "Plymouth" log journal (188 pages) from his period at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, June 25, 1860 to Setember 26, 1860.

1st item - covers lost, most of binding lost with several of the first 30 pages separated from binding. All very legible. 2nd item - Spine with losses, minor wear commensurate with age. 3rd item - post war accounting journal with losses to spine.

Biography: Jan Jacobus Matthys Damschroeder was born in Germany but spent most of his life painting in Amsterdam. GREENE CO. TN CIVIL WAR DOCUMENTS INCL. WOUNDED LISTEast Tennessee grouping of documents relating to Greene County during the Civil War. 1st grouping - includes a 1866 listing of Union soldiers applying for a certificate of disability in East Tennessee. Included in the description is the type of wound or malady, where they were discharged, and occasionally the battle where the injury occurred. An example entry, "May 7th 1866 - Capt. David Fry - Co. F 2nd Tenn Regt Mounted Inft - Discharged Annapolis Md 27th March 1865 - disease wound - Pension total - probably permanent - Residence Greeneville Tenn". Note - Capt. David Fry arranged the November 1861 burning of the railroad bridge over Lick Creek in western Greene County. The potter, Christopher Alexander Haun, was executed by Confederates for his participation in this event. Fry was captured by Confederates at least twice and was shot on three different occasions. While most are Civil War related, there is a Corporal Jesse Spears of Hawkins Co. applying for disability from wounds encountered in the War of 1812, Captain Gillenwater Company, Tenn Militia. The last written page is receipt adjustments for Saml (?sp) Doak. Approximately 57 soldiers from East Tennessee listed. 2nd grouping - Extensive grouping of papers relating to legal depositions and other documents recording the theft of horses and a sabre by Confederate soldiers in Greene County, TN. David Sevier is the administrator for George Jones (plaintiff) and W.E. Keller (defendant). Also included is an early invitation to the Freshman Hop given to the Graduating Class of the University of Tennessee in 1878. The invitation reads "E.T.U. Lamar House" with a vignette of marching Union soldiers above the letters. In 1879, the state legislature changed the name from East Tennessee University to the University of Tennessee.

Likely English, George III, circa 1780. Note: according to oral history, chair was acquired after being deaccessioned from Hammond-Harwood House, Annapolis, Maryland in the mid 20th century. 2nd item: Giltwood Louis XV style fauteuil or armchair with floral carved crest and skirt, upholstered shield form back and seat, partially upholstered armrests, cabriole legs. 38"H x 25"W x 24"D. Condition:
1st item: numerous repaired breaks to splat and back frame; repaired break to right arm and possibly to the left front leg. 2nd item: Regilded with subsequent losses.
