CESARINE HENRIETTE FLORE DAVIN (FRANCE, 1773-1844) Portrait miniature of "Anna Boleyn", as identified on the kid leather backing, oil on ivory, signed lower right, in a delicate gilt bronze frame with integral easel, retaining the remnants of the original silk covered backing. 4 1/2" x 3" overall. The painting is fine.
Anne Boleyn was Queen of England from 1533 to 1536 as the second wife of King Henry VIII. She was the mother of the future Queen Elizabeth. She was accused of treason and beheaded by Henry to clear the way for his third wife, Jane Seymour (and the Reformation).

The gown is carefully adorned with gold trim, and this same attention to detail is applied to the jewelry around her neck. She has a white headband with gold trim holding her hair back. She is holding a small puppy in her right arm, while a second dog stands on the edge of her gown. King Henry VIII ruled over England from April 21, 1509 January 28, 1547. Restretched on 19th century stretcher, 19th century lining, two periods of restoration, retouch affecting areas of face, chest and background, heavy varnish obscuring some retouch but possibly up to 20 percent of surface; frame resurfaced, separations at joints, abrasions. Series: Henry VIII and His Six Wives; Royalty, issued 1979 - 1990. Size: 7.25"H (Large)While serving as lady-in-waiting to both Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour (1509 - 1537) attracted the attention of Henry VIII. She refused any proposal from the king except marriage, a factor leading to the trial of Anne. Two weeks after Anne Boleyn was beheaded, Jane Seymour became the third wife of Henry VIII, and the only one to bear him a male heir. She died shortly after Edward was born, and was the only wife to be buried at Henry's side.

In a political arrangement by Thomas Cromwell, Anne of Cleves (1515 - 1557) was chosen to marry Henry VIII. Anne became his fourth wife on January 6, 1540, for only a brief time.
