In 1854, when excavation began on the cellar for the house, a wall of masonry was found. Early historians posited it was built by Norseman Thorvald Ericsson, who was driven ashore during an exploration voyage and made camp to repair his ship on a cape, possibly Cape Cod, in about 1004. The cottage was thus nicknamed the Norse Wall House.
