GRAND TOUR GILT-BRONZE MODEL OF THE
GRAND TOUR GILT-BRONZE MODEL OF THE FARNESE HERCULES, AFTER THE ANTIQUEStamped, 'Herkules', and raised on a marble plinth base.
15 3/4 x 4 5/8 x 4 5/8 in.
Note: This bronze is modeled after a Roman marble dating from about 200 A.D., now in the Museo Nazionale in Naples, which is in turn derived from a 4th century B.C. original, possibly by the sculptor Lyssipus. The Roman sculpture was discovered in the Baths of Caracalla in Rome by 1556 and was acquired by Pope Paul III Farnese, hence the name 'Farnese Hercules'. The sculpture was displayed by the Farnese family in the arcade around the courtyard of the Farnese Palace in Rome.
The hero Hercules is shown resting after having completed the twelve tasks assigned to him. He leans wearily on his club and the Nemean lion's skin, and holds behind his back the three golden apples that eventually ensured his immortality. The Roman sculpture was used frequently as a model for small bronzes such as this one, but was also reproduced in drawings, engravings and carved into gems, all of which were bought as souvenirs by antiquarian visitors to Rome.
Condition
Minor chips to the marble base with oxidation and rubbing to the gilded surface. Nicely cast.
Notwithstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.

DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (NEW
DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (NEW YORK/CANADA, 1838-1900), PAIR OF LANDSCAPES, OILS ON CANVAS, 8.25" X 16.25". FRAMED 15" X 23.5".DANIEL CHARLES GROSE, New York/Canada, 1838-1900, Pair of landscapes, one depicting camping by a riverside and the other a bridge. Dimensions: Oils on canvas, 8.25" x 16.25". Framed 15" x 23.5". Provenance: Notes:Daniel Charles Grose was a prolific painter of the Hudson River School, active between 1865 and 1900. While the names of his parents are unknown, several sources indicate his uncle was English antiquary Francis Grose. This assertion, however, appears to be based on some confusion over Francis Grose's nephew Daniel Grose (1766–1838), who authored The Antiquities of Ireland: A Supplement to Francis Grose,. It is possible that Daniel Charles is related to this family, but at the moment, no documentary evidence exists.Very little is known of Grose's early years. He may have migrated to Canada or directly to the United States, though the proliferation of his early work in Canadian museums and galleries suggests the former. Most advertisements of his work call him an American or Canadian artist. The earliest known Grose works are dated 1865 and consist of a series of landscapes in the province of Quebec. Most of his exeunt work depicts pastoral landscapes or romantic scenes with ruins and indicates an affinity to the second generation of the Hudson River School, circa 1848–1900; The Samuel Dorksy Museum of Art lists two of his works as examples of the Hudson River School. In 1881 Grose married Estelle Harriet Smith (1863–1914), who was also an artist. The two took a trip around the world between 1881 and 1884.Grose was a member of and exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association.
