• 3 GREEK HELLENISTIC TERRACOTTA
  3 GREEK HELLENISTIC TERRACOTTA FEMALE VOTIVE EFFIGIESGreece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 4th to 1st century BCE. This is a lovely trio of pottery figural fragments of women - including the nude torso of Aphrodite. The most complete piece is a hollow mold formed woman standing upright on an integral pedestal, her chiton robes falling to her ankles in thick drapery folds, with a garland or veil covering her head. Next is a fragment from the waist up, wearing tall headdress with remains of a white pigment lightly coating the surface. The third piece is a nude torso that is likely from Aphrodite, the goddess of love. A popular depiction of the goddess is a seated position with the ideal Greek body - petite, perky breasts, which are present here. Terracotta figures of women like these have been found in private dwellings where they may have been part of a shrine or had a religious purpose, such as this Aphrodite, which may have been given as an offering at a temple dedicated to the goddess.
