NATIVE AMERICAN PACIFIC NORTHWEST
NATIVE AMERICAN PACIFIC NORTHWEST PAINTED CEDAR BOXNative American / First Nations, Pacific Northwest Coast United States / Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful handmade cedar wood storage box painted with traditional formline motifs in black and red. Each side is the same repeated ovoids containing U and S form shapes - abstract eyes, hands, and zoomorphic faces - characteristic elements of indigenous Northwest Coast art. Often such boxes are bentwood made, however this piece is panel cut, made from 4 separate panels that are lashed together with hide cords a clear seam running the length on both sides, indicating this is a later piece- perhaps made for sale- but still displaying extraordinary craftsmanship and painting. The fitted lid is also held together with rawhide and fits snug on top of the smooth rim. Size: 12.5" L x 12.5" W x 12" H (31.8 cm x 31.8 cm x 30.5 cm)
Provenance: private West Jordon, Utah, USA collection; ex-private New Mexico, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
