Anders Monsen Askevold (Scandinavian, 1834-1900), view of the fjord, sea and mountainous landscape, oil on canvas; 20 1/2" x 32"; signed and dated 1890 lower left. Askevold studied in Bergen, Norway and moved to Dusseldorf, Germany in 1855 where he was a student of Hans Gude at the Academy. He visited his native country regularly in the summer to find inspiration for new pictures, thus nearly all of his works show nature scenes and country life in the fjords.

A near-identical example in this form dates circa 1st century B.C., and can be found in the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens
