Rectangular fold-over top with rounded and foliate carved corners resting on an elaborate acanthus leaf carved pedestal, the quadruped base with carved double shell finials, table resting on figural dolphin feet. 28 1/2" H x 35 1/2" (open, 17 3/4" not opened) x 36" W. Philadelphia, second quarter of the 19th century.

Note: The distinctive carved supports on these tables relate to a number of similar examples from Boston cabinet shops and are related to the work of London-trained carver Thomas Wightman whose work was incorporated by Boston cabinetmakers such as William Fisk and Thomas Seymour. CLASSICAL RENT TABLE. Ohio ca.1830 walnut cherry curly maple and pine. Octagonal top with four drawers and acorn drops over a bold baluster shaft and resting on cutout feet. 29''h. 24''d. Ex Pete and Ann Lowder (Ohio) sold at Garth's November 2005 lot 66 and May 2008 lot 6. The so-called rent table was a form designed for use on country estates with multiple drawers for organizing a landlord's records. More common in England rent tables were used in early America including by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. A signed Hamilton County Ohio rent table was published in Made in Ohio: Furniture 1788-1888 entry 54. The present rent table was exhibited in Age of Optimism: Ohio Builds a Statehouse (Riffe Center Columbus 1996) and in Neoclassical Furniture (1780-1850) (Decorative Arts Center of Ohio Lancaster 1999-2000).
