MOUGIN, FRENCH, 1880-1900, the musician with intense brown in deep contemplation, he holds a feather quill pen, wearing a fur trimmed coat, at his right a music stand with the composition Pastorale No. 6, notated to be played allegro, over a violin and bow resting atop a bass drum with beveled window opening to a gilt engraved roman numeral dial within an egg and dart gilt metal mount, the clockworks marked, "AD. Mougin Deux Médailles," raised on a lyre form stand with a Louix XIV style pendulum, a symbol for Apollo, and accompanied by a tambourine on a parasol, a french horn, coronet, a twelve string lute, a harp, and Orpheus' turtle shell lyre, the composer's hand rests on a scroll engraved, "l'orage fidelio," his foot enters the viewers space and rests on a pyramidal marble base gilt engraved "Beethoven," ending in tapered feet. Note: The reference, "L'Orage Fidelio," translating into "The storm of Fidelio," likely referring to the only opera Beethoven ever wrote, which he struggled with and revised tremendously, writing up to four versions.
