AUSTIN DOBSON, HANDWRITTEN POEM IN BOOK, 1881 “To A Missal of the 13th Century” by Austin Dobson (1840-1921). Poem is completely written in Dobson’s hand and boldly signed. This prose was written in 1881, per the note penciled on the last page of the poem. The poem is 2 pages tipped to the first pages after the free paper, bound in period brown leather. Each cover graced with a three-line gilded border, and with the title and author gilded on the spine. 28pp., of which only one page was used to mount the handwritten poem. Front board separated from binding.

March 8, general news, strongly written letters give a taste of the feelings at that time. June 18th, Virginia votes for a president to lead their state's ratification efforts, Edmund Pendleton and the return of John Adams from Europe. August 22, many letters including one describing American faults as attachment to property and fondness of luxuries. November 7th, transmittal from Ellsworth, the federal constitution to the state conventioneers in Boston. August 25, general news. November 24, Washington's words as he signed the Constitution to be ratified, plus much more.

SET OF EIGHT SOUTHERN FEDERAL INLAID CHERRY DINING CHAI...early 19th century, likely inland or coastal South Carolina or Georgia, seatback with pierced slats centered by floral inlaid medallions, two armchairs with shaped arms, trapezoidal seat, tapered legs, banded feet, birch secondary wood, 45 x 22-1/4 x 20 in.
Note: According to corresponding documentation, these chairs were made for Dr. Alexander Grayson Verdiere's home at Bull Hill Plantation in Beaufort, South Carolina during the early 19th century, along with a matching sideboard, likely made by a cabinetmaker in South Carolina or Georgia. A closely related set of chairs are illustrated in Georgia's Legacy, History Charted Through the Arts by Jane Webb Smith, pg. 137, fig. 67. This chair form was common among chairs made by Charleston cabinetmakers, who typically imported similar inlay—see Bivens, The Furniture of Charleston, 1680-1820, Vol. II, pgs. 771-775; pg. 639.
