Note: The portrait of Thomas Bolling Robertson comes into the possession of the Harriet Gwathmey Chinn estate through her direct linage to Gov. Wyndham Robertson of Virginia a younger brother of Thomas Bolling Robertson governor of Louisiana.
Thomas Bolling Robertson was the son of William Robertson and Elizabeth Bolling. He was born on February 27, 1779 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia and died on October 5, 1828 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. He is buried there on property of the Greenbrier Resort. Thomas Bolling Robertson practiced law in Virginia until he was appointed by President Jefferson on August 12, 1807, as secretary of the Territory of Orleans where he served until Louisiana?s admission as a state in 1812. He then became its first member of the national House of Representatives. While retaining his office of secretary, he also served as federal land commissioner and briefly as attorney general in 1808. Elected in 1820, as Louisiana?s third governor, Robertson served until he resigned in 1824 from the governorship. In November of 1824 and became a judge for the District of Louisiana and served in that capacity until his death in 1828. He was married to Leila Skipwith, there were no children from this marriage. Thomas Robertson was an elder brother of Wyndham Robertson governor of Virginia 1837-1837 and 2nd great grandfather to Mrs. Chinn. Louisiana Secretary of State.
