FRENCH SCHOOL, (19TH/20TH
FRENCH SCHOOL, (19TH/20TH CENTURY) A BRONZE FIGURAL SCU...FRENCH SCHOOL, (19th/20th Century) A BRONZE FIGURAL SCULPTURE, "Bacchanalian Maiden," the patinated bronze sculpture of a seductive young maiden wearing her long wavy hair gathered under a grape leaf and vine crown while gazing downwards and her figure modeled contrapposto with exposed breasts and torso with one arm holding aloft a flaming torch (now lacking) over plump hips sparingly draped with strap bound furs falling to the ground behind her, unsigned and raised on a stepped square form rouge griotte marble base. Height: 20 3/4" Width: 6 3/4" Depth: 6 3/4" Note: Purportedly, during nocturnal Bacchanalian festivals young women would dress as Bacchanites and run through the streets of Rome carrying flaming torches that would remain lit after repeatedly being plunged into the Tiber river.
Condition:
Overall good condition with some discolorations towards the ankles, lacking the torch in her right hand and surface buildup in crevices throughout. Casting is good and not overtly crisp adding to the alluring if not slightly erotic nature of this sculpture representing a participant in a mysterious cult from the days (and nights) of ancient Rome. Griotte marble base has a dull surface needing cleaning and possibly polishing. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder. Statements by Simpson Galleries regarding the condition of objects are for guidance only and should not be relied upon as statements of fact and do not constitute a representation, warranty, or assumption of liability by Simpson Galleries.
