Confederate Bandsman Charleston
Confederate Bandsman Charleston Grays Paper Mounted Tintype CDV-sized tintype of a musician identified in pencil as Lt. Morris ? posed with a massive over-the-shoulder saxhorn carried by early war regimental bands. The youthful bandsman wears a light colored eight-button frock coat with darker tape trim around the upper and lower collar decorative shoulder trim indicative of a militia musician and outside watch pocket edged in tape. The right cuff appears to show four smaller buttons. No photographer's imprint. The frock coat is similar to the uniform worn by members of the 1st Regiment South Carolina Volunteers (Hagood's) organized in December 1860 from Charleston's antebellum militia companies and the 1st Regiment of Rifles (Orr's) organized in July 1861.Penciled beneath the image is Charleston Grays 1861. According to South Carolina Antebellum Militia Units and Confederate Military Land Units no such company ever existed making positive identification of Lt. Morris problematic. HDS lists 2 soldiers named?Morris from South Carolina who enlisted as musicians including R. Morris who served in the South Carolina 2nd Light Artillery and Charles Morris who served in Company A of the South Carolina 16th Infantry.? Condition: Varnished tintype is near EXC with strong clarity. Rigid paper mount with impressed star pattern design with wear and soiling. Paper covering plate on back undamaged.
