BAMILEKE ELEPHANT MASK, CAMEROONA Bamileke elephant mask ( mbap mteng ), black cloth over burlap, decorated with thousands of polychrome beads in geometric patterns. Cameroon, circa mid-20th c.
The mask measures 45" high by approximately 16" wide, and it is displayed atop a custom stand that measures 65" high and 9" x 9" at the base.
Condition
Good condition, noting a few very small holes to the cloth at the back of the head. The beadwork appears to be completely intact across the mask.

Bwami Mask Lega People Congo Carved
Bwami Mask Lega People Congo Carved square shaped wood mask with concave heart-shaped face with protruding slit eyes and small open mouth overall tan cool with face rubbed with white clay and having long fibrous beard. The Lega people (or Warega) are an ethnic group of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The masks are used during initiation rites. The Bwami works of art are often associated with proverbs and these proverbs in conjunction with dance poetry and song give wisdom to members of the society.
