SCOTTISH BASKET HILT SWORD, 79TH REGIMENTScottish basket hilt 1828 pattern sword, 19th c., the ricasso marked at both sides with the Star of Damascus proof mark and "Buckmaster & Co., 3 Burlington St. London", the 31.75"l foliate engraved blade further marked with a crown over the stylized VR (Queen Victoria) and "79th Cameron Highlanders", the multi branch steel basket with leather and cloth liner over the wire wrapped shagreen grip, housed in a steel scabbard, overall: 39"l *Note: William Buckmaster & Co., London, operated from 1841-1884. The 79th Highland Cameronian Volunteers was formed in 1793.
It became the 79th Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders Regiment in 1881.

The classic basket hilt showing flattened, scrolling chiseled bars, the leather grip with cord winding, terminating with a cat’s head pummel. Italian, 17th century. Note: This type of sword was carried by the guard of the doge (chief magistrate) of Venice in the late 15th century. It is named for the members of this guard, who came from the Dalmatian Coast of present-day Croatia and were then called Schavoni in Venice.

BRITISH 1897 GEORGE V INFANTRY OFFICER`S SWORDBritish 1897 pattern George V Officer's sword having a three-quarter basket hilt, both sides of the blade heavily engraved with symbolism and devices of the British Empire to about two thirds of the blade length. One side of the blade marked S&J Kitchin Makers Sheffield and the other the six-pointed star with the word "Proved" etched on the blade. Sword together with leather scabbard measure approximately 40-1/4" in length the blade 32-1/2" in length. George V swords are currently used as ceremonial swords in the British military.

SCOTTISH HIGHLANDER OFFICER PARADE SWORD W/ SCABBARD**First Time At Auction**
Northwestern Europe, Scotland, ca. early 20th century CE. A Scottish Highlander officer's sword with the distinctive basket hilt and velvet straps and tassels. The steel double-edged blade is engraved with decorative thistles and scrolling vines, and 6-pointed star proof mark and disc (slug) on the other side. The basket hilt is lined with velvet and the grip is covered in ray skin. The brass parade scabbard has a pair of rings with attached leather and velvet straps with silver trim ribbons. Size in scabbard: 40" L x 6" W (101.6 cm x 15.2 cm); blade: 31.75" L x 1" W (80.6 cm x 2.5 cm)

Blade has been cleaned, brass elements with some fingerprints.

A Scottish basket hilt broad sword double edge blade basket hilt pierced with hearts and discs iron pommel second half of the 18th century (grip and parts of basket restored) Estimate ?250-400 Blade length 30.5 inches. Minor dents and wear to the basket hilt with old repairs to the back section some of which looks like replacement parts please see additional photographs. Plain wooden grip looks like a later replacement. Some form of fine scroll work engraving noted on the blade although this is worn and concealed by oxidisation and pitting slight bend to the tip of the blade with a number of small dinks and notches along the length of it. No marks to the blade. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear imperfections or the effects of aging.
