Note: During WWI, the McBeys came to the United States for safety purposes. The family relates a story that James McBey was arrested as a spy and questioned when it was reported that he was doing a panoramic sketch of the port of San Francisco (see lot 4108536). This watercolor is dated from the same period.

Note: During WWI, the McBeys came to the United States. The family relates a story that James McBey was arrested as a spy and questioned when it was reported that he was doing this panoramic sketch of the port of San Francisco. McBey included naval ships in his depiction which apparently was strictly forbidden.A label verso indicates that by 1968, this drawing was in the possession of Arthur J. Loeb, the brother of Marguerite Loeb McBey.
