A powerful and impressive piece, appears never used. The Magnus Root Beer Co. was started by Joseph A Magnus. Prior to prohibition the family was in the spirits business. With prohibition they started making root beer rather then whiskey which lasted until the mid to late 1930's. Eventually the business name was changed to the Magnus Fruit Products Co of San Franciso California. The reverse side bottom left seam edge has The American Art Works, Coshocton, Ohio as sign maker. Sign shows excellent color & gloss, with a super clean frothy mug stein graphic. Some paint scuffing along edges, slight oxidation noted on rear, slight scratches noted. Measures 8.75"W x 19.25"L

Goddard Collection Literature: Illustrated in Phyllis M. Goddard, "Spratling Silver: A Field Guide; Recognizing a William Spratling Treasure" (Altadena, CA: Keenan Tyler Paine, 2003), 97, figs. 2-306 and 2-305. Notes: Although this mug is hallmarked with Spratling's primary mark indicating sterling quality, it appears that it may actually be made of silver-plate designed as a model for the designs Spratling created for the Hotel Pierre Marques in Acapulco. "In the mid 1950s, Spratling agreed to design for the Pierre Marques Hotel in Acapulco, a group of articles that included key tags, ashtrays, champagne buckets and stands, martini pitchers, finger bowls, beer mugs, butter dishes, crepe suzette pans, and coffee services. These designs were made of silver plate and ebony. All included an applied nautilus design that the hotel referred to as 'The Pierre Marques Star.' The primary hallmark (and only hallmark) that appeared on these silver-plated items is shown below. None of these materials have been seen in any material other than silver-plate, and therefore, no tertiary mark was used. Items stamped with this hallmark were Spratling's designs, but the items were not produced by Spratling. Photos of many of these designs can be found in 'Spratling Silver: A Field Guide' on page 97."
