1910S THE CRIGLER & CRIGLER COMPANY
1910S THE CRIGLER & CRIGLER COMPANY TIN BEER TRAYFor your consideration is this 1910s, pre-prohibition The Crigler & Crigler Company tin beer tray. A group of German immigrants settled in Madison County, Virginia, and from there came the Crigler family. Llewellyn N. Crigler was the first Crigler to try his hand at the alcoholic beverage industry. Llewellyn was raised on the family farm and received his education at White Haven Seminary in the Boone County town of Union. Prior to moving to Covington and allegedly joining forces with A. R. Mullins, he was first employed in an unspecified mercantile enterprise in Lawrenceburg and Lexington (1862–1872). He later entered into a partnership with his uncle, Robert L. Crigler, to create the well-known "Crigler & Crigler" firm. The two were described as the "sole proprietors of the Buffalo Springs Distillery in Scott County and the Woodland Distillery in Lexington, KY, and manufacture only the finest sour mash whisky, with annual sales of $300,000." Then, they had 18 workers in their buildings along with three traveling salesmen. Around 1868, the Cincinnati-based Crigler family bought the Buffalo Springs distillery in Scott County, Kentucky. The "Woodland" brand, created for Crigler & Crigler by Headley & Peck at the Woodland Distillery, is also well-known. Between 1917 and 1919, the business stopped operations. The beer tray shows a white colored background and a bronze colored rim encircling the beer tray. The beer tray shows a woman with her check pressed against her horse as they look towards the viewer. To the left of the image it reads, "The Crigler & Crigler Co." in gold lettering, while to the right of the image it reads, "Distillers of Kentucky Whiskies" in gold lettering. The tray shows some wear from its antique age and use throughout the years showing scratches and paint loss in some spots but is in overall good condition. The beer tray measures 15 15/16" in diameter and weighs approx. 1 lb and 4 oz.
