Provenance: Childs Gallery Boston 1979; from the artist to Mrs. William Jones Seabury Long Island New York; to her grandson Andrew Oliver New York and Boston 1978; thence to Belle Cheniere. Note: This drawing depicts a post-Civil War mother taking shelter under a tree for the duration of the impending storm where she comforts her two children and their dog. The mother's spreading skirts suggest the stability of her mission a point belied by her and her daughter's anxious expressions which are mirrored by that of the dog.

WL, monogrammist, American, 19th c, pencil drawing, "USS Preble-Right before the wind under Royals & Foresail, Rolling Like Bricks!!!" signed and dated July 12, 1849, 4 1/2" x 5", in a walnut deep frame. Edward Preble, 1761-1807, was a U.S. naval officer. The 2nd US Navy ship named after him was launched in 1839. It was a sloop that fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, and visited Japan. She was accidentally destroyed by fire in 1863. Estimate $300-500

ATTRIBUTED TO ERASTUS SALISBURY FIELD (AMERICAN, 1805 - 1900), "AARON IN A HAILSTORM", OIL ON CANVAS, DEPICTS VIOLENT WEATHER EVENT...Attributed to Erastus Salisbury Field (American, 1805 - 1900), "Aaron in a Hailstorm", oil on canvas, depicts violent weather event at night with crowds running to take shelter, Aaron in forefront with arms and staff raised, no signature viewed, cleaned, restored and attributed to Field at Springfield Museum of Fine Art (now renamed the Michele & Donald D' Amour Museum of Fine Art), one of a series of twelve works believed to have been made for a Massachusetts church, seventh one of the Plague Series (after works by John Martin (1789 - 1854), published 1833), in custom made frame of rosewood veneer with canted sides 3" deep, with Goupil & Co. preparer's stamp verso, three holes and stains repaired, original stretcher kept cleaned, work relined in 1984 at Northampton, Massachusetts conservation studio Emil G. Schnorr, scattered in-painting, back covered by foam core, ss: 21 3/4" h. x 26 1/2". [NOTE FROM CONSULTANT: This previously unknown work from a private family, came to light after the 1984 landmark Erastus Salisbury Field exhibition at the Springfield Museum in Springfield Massachusetts, was later examined by painting conservator Emil G. Schnorr and the exhibition curator and art historian Mary Black who determined the work to be by Field. It is not known how many examples from the artist's Plague Series were actually produced by the artist, and other examples currently appear to exist only in museums.]
