A French Bronze Figure of "Neptune"
A French Bronze Figure of "Neptune" 19th c. after Michel Anguier (French 1612/14-1686) height 22 in. Note: One of the most celebrated ensembles of the mid-17th c. was a group of bronze statuettes (at this same size) commissioned in 1652 by Louis XIV's court jeweler Montarsi from Michel Anguier lately returned to Paris from his term as pensionnaire of the French Academy in Rome. The best surviving casts of this "Neptune" are in the Metropolitan Museum New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum London; it was originally paired with an "Amphitrite" (as "Jupiter" was with "Juno" "Pluto" with "Ceres" "Mars" with "Venus" and "Bacchus" with a "Nymph" after the Antique). Neptune is shown in his Virgilian role of calming the waves with a trident (now missing) in his left hand and a sea-horse wreath at his feet. The very dynamic pose is a tribute to Michel Anguier's experience as an assistant to the great Gianlorenzo Bernini

17TH C. DUTCH MAP - REGNO DI NAPOLI
17TH C. DUTCH MAP - REGNO DI NAPOLI - BY BLAEUWillem Janszoon Blaeu (Dutch, 1571-1638). "Regno Di Napoli" copper plate engraving with hand coloring. Published in Amsterdam, ca. 1640. A beautifully engraved map of the Kingdom of Naples with 12 coats of arms (6 bordering the left side and 6 bordering the right side) as well as the Kingdom of Naples coat of arms featured above the cartouche flanked by two mermaids and the Spanish coat of arms at the upper right. The mermaids as well as the illustrations of ships at sea may allude to Blaeu's background, as he was the son of a herring merchant. While Blaeu elected to pursue astronomy and mathematics rather than fishing, an attraction to the sea likely informed his work. A fine example with vibrant hand coloring and vivid text on the verso. Size of map: 15" L x 19.625" W (38.1 cm x 49.8 cm) Size of sheet: 19.5" L x 23.125" W (49.5 cm x 58.7 cm)
A prominent Dutch geographer, Willem Janszoon Blaeu honed his globe making skills with Tycho Brahe, a famous Danish astronomer. At his shop in Amsterdam, Blaeu published maps, sold globes and instruments, and also edited works by intellectuals such as Descartes. He also created an atlas entitled, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive, Atlas novus" (1635).
