Monumental Painted Linen Panel,
Monumental Painted Linen Panel, "Thoughts of Love", featuring a pensive classical maiden seated in a farm yard surrounded by doves, fourth quarter 19th century, presented in a fruitwood-stained beechwood frame, h. 63-1/2", w. 98". Ex-collection the Estate of Josephine Baker, Castelnaud-Fayrac, France. Josephine Baker became famous in the 1920's for her on stage comic routines, singing and exotic beauty. She took on nicknames which included Black Venus, Black Pearl, and Creole Goddess. Her career spanned fifty years until her death in 1975. During her hayday she rivaled the likes of Gloria Swanson and Mary Pickford as the most photographed woman in the world and earned more than any entertainer in Europe. Due to the racial tension in America she spent most of her time in Paris and refused to perform in front of segregated audiences. The NAACP named May 20th Josephine Baker Day in honor of her efforts. During World War II, she served France by both performing for the troops and as an honorable correspondent for the French Resistance by smuggling secret messages written on her sheet music. After the war, she adopted 12 children from around the world. At her Funeral the French government honored her with a 21 gun salute making her the first American woman buried in France with Military honors.
