Ben Shahn, (American, 1898-1969).
Ben Shahn, (American, 1898-1969). Offset lithographs accompanying Wendell Berry's memorial poem, "November Twenty Six Nineteen Hundred Sixty Three," 1963. Subject was a tribute to John F. Kennedy, and a memorial to his death. Signed, framed behind glass, 30" x 30. Born in Lithuania to an orthodox Jewish family, Shahn became one of America's leading Social-Realist painters, addressing causes related to social injustices. In 1998, the Jewish Museum in New York City organized a traveling exhibition of his works that he created between 1936 and 1965.

BEN SHAHN (AMERICAN, 1898–1969) 22 ½" x 17 ¾" sheet size by 17¾" "Rainer Maria Rilke, For the Sake of a Single Verse, New York, The Ben Shahn Trust", 1968 (P. 113-25, 127-136). The complete set of 23 lithographs in colors and black and white, title page, text in English, and justification, on Velin d'Arches with watermarks, signed on the justification in red crayon, copy 611 of 950 (the first 200 with the lithographs signed, 201-950 with the lithographs signed in the stone as here, and ten hors commerce), the full sheets, loose (as issued) with12 framed, in linen-covered embossed portfolio. The portfolio is separated; 8 lithographs are framed in natural wood frames and floated on white matting (overall with frames 30" x 25"), 4 lithographs are matted outside of the portfolio, and 11 remain inside the portfolio. The text and Roman numeral pages for the framed and matted lithographs were cut pasted on the verso of the frames. Accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity from Touchstone Press dated 1969.
