BENJAMIN (BENNY) COLLIN (DANISH/AMERICAN. 1896-1974)Abstract #44. Circa 1950. Signed Benny Collin. Oil on Board. Measuring 54 by 48 in. (Cond: retouched, cleaned) cf. Benjamin (Benny) Collin (1896 -1979), born Benjamin Cohen, he was a Danish émigré who came to the U.S. fleeing Nazi persecution during the war. Informed by the strong tradition of European abstraction, he created many colorful acrylic-washes on canvas, found materials and paper with compositions based on a complex mathematical formula that yielded rhythmic, vibrant, kaleidoscopic images evoking the repetition of musical scores such as those of Bach and Mozart.
