Beth Cavener Stichter (1973 USA)
Beth Cavener Stichter (1973 USA) Olympia2006Stoneware porcelain slip and paint; ht. 26 wd. 48.5 dp. 35 in.Olympia is one of sculptor Beth Cavener Stichter's most important works widely illustrated and exhibited. It brings together all the central themes in her art; risk seduction trust abuse and her profound and at times disquieting and intimate examination of sexuality. This work like all of Stichter's "animal" art is actually a portrait of a real person with the goat acting as avatar. She relates this work to John Berger's book Way of Seeing in which he writes that men are pure surveyors while women need to be both surveyor and surveyed to survive.References: This work is illustrated in both publications as well as cover image for Clark Garth.
