Ruth Starr Rose, American,
Ruth Starr Rose, American, 1887-1965, b&w lithograph, Children on a Carousel, dated 1933, 10 1/2" x 14", nicely matted and framed. Ruth Starr Rose studied at the New York Arts Students League under George Miller, Master Printer. She was noted for her work as a lithographer and as a serigrapher. but was also accomplished in the mediums of oil and watercolor paintings and sculpting. The permanent exhibits of her work at the Library of Congress include "George Washington's Fire Engine" "Black Christ" and "Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray" which also won the Artist for Victory Award. The works purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York include "Swing Lo Sweet Chariot", "All God's Children Got Shoes" and the "Gospel Train". Ruth Starr Rose was noted for her interpretations of African American spirituals. She did this through interviews and life experiences. "You can't dramatize the feelings of a people that have come out of great suffering unless you share their ideals. I believe it was religion that brought black Americans through their suffering. If I can only convey to white people this sense that the power of God is really present here for us, people of all colors, then I'll feel my mission is accomplished." this is taken from the Christian Science Monitor of Boston January 24, 1955 Estimate $200-300
