A SPANISH COLONIAL PAINTING,
A SPANISH COLONIAL PAINTING, "VIRGEN DE LA CONSOLACIóN ...A SPANISH COLONIAL PAINTING, "Virgen de la Consolación de Jerez," 18TH/19TH CENTURY, oil on canvas, with partial dedication, "V.R.to de la Milagrosa Imagn. de N.S. de Consolación. Aparecida en el Golfo de Rosas año de 1489 la q. se Venera en el Imperial Convento de Religiosa Dominicos de la Ciudad...," bearing the insignia of the Dominican Order, 41" x 31", framed, 45" x 35". Note: The Spanish legend recalls that the Virgin of Consolation of the City of Jerez has its origins in the Mediterranean Sea, when the Genoese navigator Domingo Adorno sailed with five other ships in the Gulf of Roses. Surprised by a great storm and certain to wreck, there suddenly appeared two small lights approaching. The crew witnessed a miracle, finding a precious image of the Virgin Mary. Domingo Adorno dreamt of seeing the Blessed Virgin tell him, "Take me to Jerez, to the convent of my children the Dominican friars. I am going to console the people of Jerez." Without knowing exactly how or where to leave the image, the oxen pulled the cart with the holy image until they reached Jerez's doorway of the convent church of Santo Domingo. Centuries of veneration of the image have brought consolation and blessing to many. Copies of the image are found in both Spain and the Americas. One example held at the Denver Art Museum was executed by Vicente Luciano Talavera (Mexican active 1730).

17TH C. GILLIS NENS ALABASTER
17TH C. GILLIS NENS ALABASTER RELIEFS BIBLICAL FEASTSGillis Nens (Dutch, d. 1667). "Wedding Feast at Cana" and "Last Supper." Mechelen alabaster relief plaques. Both signed "G N N" with a ligature of SI or SL on bottom edge. An impressive pair of Old Master reliefs from the Dutch Golden Age! Two Mechelen gilt alabaster reliefs by Gillis Nens depicting Biblical feast scenes: the Wedding Feast at Cana and the Last Supper. The first plaquette portrays the first miracle attributed to Jesus in the Gospel of John when Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the 12 disciples are invited to a wedding during which the wine has run out. At his mother's request, Jesus turns the water to wine, delivering the first sign of his divinity. Here, we can see Christ sitting to the right side and lifting his hand to his mother who sits to the center. A youth piles vessels at his feet of the savior , who raises his hand in anticipation of the miraculous transformation. Size of relief (both the same): 4.75" W x 3.6" H (12.1 cm x 9.1 cm); Size: 8.8" W x 7.9" H (22.4 cm x 20.1 cm)
Alternatively, the second relief depicts the moment during the Last Supper when Jesus announces that one of the apostles will betray him. In this depiction, John lunges onto Christ's lap, as though fainting from sorrow, as the Son of Man reaches across the table and places a hand on Judas, as though directly addressing him. A bag of coins can clearly be seen in Judas's right hand. The remaining apostles appear taken aback in shock and begin to whisper among themselves. Note the liberal remains of intricate gilt designs adorning the background of each piece!
Gillis Nens was a sculptor who was active in Mechelen in the early to mid-17th century. He was registered in the Mechelen Guild of Saint Luke in 1609 as a pupil of Cornelis Verhaegen and became a master in 1618.
An alabaster relief by Gillis Nens of the same size and similar condition was sold by Sotheby's Paris for $1816 as lot 3 on June 15th, 2017 Sale Number: PF1709. Additionally, a lot of 4 Netherlandish alabaster reliefs, 1 of which was monogrammed GN or Gilles Nens, was sold by Sotheby's London on December 10th, 2015 as lot 357, Sale Number: L15233. Though the hammer price was not disclosed, the lot was estimated at 6000 to 8000 British pounds sterling (equivalent to about $6801 to $9069).
