GEORGE EARL, "COUVREFEU II", C.GEORGE EARL, "COUVREFEU II", C. 1906 George Earl (British, 1824 - 1908), "Couvrefeu II" signed lower left "George Earl" and later inscribed in another hand "Couvrefeu II 1913" also lower left, depicting the racehorse Couvrefeu II with rider in racing silks, the two in a bucolic landscape, the reverse of canvas stamped "G. Rowney & Co. / London W. / Quality A." Image: 31.75" H x 37.5" W Frame: 37" H x 43" W. Note: This interesting canvas by famed sporting artist George Earl depicts the legendary Couvrefeu II (1903 - 1918?, Couvrefeu means 'Curfew' in French) three-time consecutive winner of the Scottish Grand National in 1911, 1912, and 1913. The canvas is inscribed with the horse's name and the year of his final win. George Earl, a noted painter of dogs and sporting paintings died in 1908, which leads us to believe that this picture was commissioned when Couvrefeu II began his racing career as a three-year old in 1906, under the ownership of Arthur Fitzgerald. It appears the later inscription was perhaps added after his final win in 1913. Additionally, the National Portrait Gallery notes that the mark of the artists' supplier George Rowney on the verso was only in use between 1904 and 1920.
