IMPORTANT OIL, JEFFERSON SMALL BY CHARLES A. TREADWELL A rare 19th C. NH O/C folk portrait of Jefferson Small, the miller of Grasmere (Goffstown NH) in his millers attire, by the NH artist Charles Augustus Treadwell. This portrait by Treadwell and its sitter are cited in the History of Goffstown vol. 11 page 470-471. Two of these portraits exists, this one painted for the Small family, and the other identical copy, now at the NH State Historical Society, which Charles Treadwell displayed at his gallery in Manchester NH in the 19th C. as an example of his work. Image 29.5” x 24.25”, Overall in a period gilt frame 33” x 28”. Provenance: the Donald and Phyllis Randall Estate. Literature: Hadley, George Plummer. History of the Town of Goffstown, 1733-1920. ”Small, Jefferson b. 1802, miller for many years employed in the gristmill that stood where the pulp mill afterwards stood at Grasmere. He was often a conspicuous figure in church and other places appearing in his shirt sleeves wearing a vest with a bright blue front and red back. The artist Treadwell once painted a picture of him in this costume which he displayed quite extensively as an advertisement. He d. Nov. 29 1872”.
