JACK FELLOWS (B. 1941) "1964 BOEING 747 B" OILJack Fellows (American, B. 1941) "1964 Boeing 747 B" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite painting.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Boeing 747b from the 100 Year of Powered Flight Collection.
The Boeing 747 is undoubtedly the most important airliner in history and has helped revolutionize the world of air transportation. Like many Boeing commercial products, the 747 was a tremendous gamble, but this one was shared by Pan American World Airways. The new airliner required an entirely new factory to be built, the largest in the world under one-roof, and construction of the first Boeing 747 began even before the factory was completed. The new aircraft, with its huge gross take-off weight, long range and large, up to 450 passenger capacity, dwarfed all previous airliners in size - and in performance. Priced at almost $17,000,000 in 1966, the 747 caused airline executives to wince, because they knew that they had to buy them to stay competitive.

STEVE FERGUSON (B. 1946) ANTONOV
STEVE FERGUSON (B. 1946) ANTONOV AN-225 "MRIYA"Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Antonov AN-225 "Mriya"" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Cold Press Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Powered Flight Commemorative Cover for "Centennial of Aviation" issued 2003.
Oleg Antonov's design bureau became a fertile source for Soviet air transports. The An-225 is built on the solid basis of the huge Antonov An-125, a four engine jet giant that weighs more than 800,000 pounds on take-off. But the Soviet space shuttle program required an even larger aircraft to carry the Buran shuttle orbiter, much as a modified Boeing 747 is used to carry the American space shuttle. Antonov met the challenge with the An-225, which has six huge Lotarev D-18T turbofans boasting 51,590 pounds of thrust each. The aircraft, which spans 290 feet, has a maximum gross take-off weight of more than 1,300,000 pounds. Despite its huge size, the An-225 is capable of a top speed of 540 mph, although it cruises at about 480. Wingspan: 290 feet Length: 275 feet 7 in Maximum Speed: 540 mph Engine: Six Lotarev D-18T turbofans of 51,590 pounds of thrust Image Size: 16.25 x 14 in.

STEVE FERGUSON (B. 1946) "B-47E STRATOJET"Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "B-47E Stratojet" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Stratojet Classic Collection Series stamp issued July 19, 1997.
Powered by six engines, the world's first swept-wing jet bomber, the B-47 Stratojet, made its debut in 1947. The plane boasted a top speed of over 550 mph -- faster than most fighters of that time. Compared to the B-29 bomber, which required a 10-man crew, the Stratojet needed only a pilot, co-pilot and bombardier/navigator. On September 1, 1953, the USAF carried out the first in-flight refueling of one jet by another, using a tanker derived from a B-47 to refuel another B-47. By 1956, 2,032 Stratojets had been delivered to the USAF. Of these, 1,373 were manufactured by Boeing, the other 659 by Douglas and Lockheed. The venerable bombers served America faithfully for 20 years.

STEVE FERGUSON (B. 1946) N.
STEVE FERGUSON (B. 1946) N. AMERICAN B-45 TORNADOSteve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "North American B-45 Tornado Airplane" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Cold Press Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover with the U.S. 29c Flag stamp issued March 17, 1992. In 1944 American military planners realized that control of the skies truly lay with jet power -- for bombers as well as fighters. A year later Douglas, Boeing, Consolidated, Martin and North American submitted proposals for jet bombers to the Army Air Force. North American's XB-45 prototype made its first flight in 1947, and the aircraft was such a hit that the Air Force initially ordered 96 "A" models, christened Tornados. The Tornado was the U.S. armed forces' first four-engined jet bomber. During the first tension-filled years after World War II, B-45s of the 47th Bomb Wing based at Sculthorpe, England, served as NATO's primary European based nuclear deterrent strike force. But the Tornado never fired a shot in anger, and the formidable aircraft passed into aviation history by the end of the 1950s.
