A marine mammal bone amulet and pendant in the form of a stylized eagle head. Shamans wore protective pendants or charms such as this piece that were imbued with power from sacred animals and ancestral emblems during healing rituals. The charm would hold and protect the ill person's soul and the eagle would guide their spirit through supernatural realms. This bone has developed a dark gray patina from over the years of use. 19TH C. TLINGIT BONE PENDANTS
19TH C. TLINGIT BONE PENDANTS SKELETAL SHAMAN, CREATURE...Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. 19th century CE. A fine pair of hand carved totemic pendants made from marine mammal bone in the classic formline style that is iconic of the Pacific Northwest. The first is of a skeletal shaman figure, with delineated ribs, gaping mouth, and wide vacant eyes. The tall headdress is indicative of the ceremonial goat horn crown of shamans. The other pendant is a highly stylized creature with a fish like tail and a forward-facing head with horns and teeth. The tail tip is pierced for suspension, and the shoulders of the shaman pendant are also perforated for suspension. Protective pendants or charms like these were worn on cords or folded into clothing, imbued with power from the shamans or spirit animals depicted. Size: 3" L x 1.125" W (7.6 cm x 2.9 cm)

ANCIENT ALASKAN BERING SEA BONE
ANCIENT ALASKAN BERING SEA BONE DRILLED PENDANTNative American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Beringian / Old Bering Sea Culture, ca. 200 BCE to 500 CE. A fine marine mammal or caribou bone pendant incised with dots and concentric circles. A hole is drilled through the rounded tip, perhaps to use for suspension as a pendant or perhaps a fishing lure. The ancient Alaskan cultures that lived along coastal areas relied upon the marine animals such as walrus for subsistence and materials for tools and clothing. Carvings in bone were their main artistic output, although some of their functions, such as this pendant - whether ceremonial, utilitarian, or artistic - remains unclear. Size: 2.75" L x 0.8" W (7 cm x 2 cm)

5TH C. EGYPTIAN COPTIC BONE PENDANT
5TH C. EGYPTIAN COPTIC BONE PENDANT / TALISMAN**Originally Listed At $400**
Egypt, Coptic culture, 5th to 8th century CE. A hand-carved ungulate or bovine bone idol of an abstract standing figure for use as a pendant or talisman, the shoulders are pierced laterally either for suspension or attaching articulated arms. The schematic details - broad hips and narrow waist - suggest a female figure. It is likely that such bone dolls would have been clothed in textiles or even given wool or human hair coiffures, attached via clay or pitch to lend a more lifelike appearance. The purpose of these dolls remains ambiguous, but perhaps the women figures served as fertility or protective amulets. Size: 1.125" W x 3.75" H (2.9 cm x 9.5 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private West Hollywood, California, USA collection; ex-Lin Emery (1926-2021) collection, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, acquired prior to 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

19TH C. TLINGIT / HAIDA BONE
19TH C. TLINGIT / HAIDA BONE PENDANT ORCA WHALENative American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. This is a lovely pendant in the form of an orca (killer whale) hand-carved from a marine mammal bone- possibly whale- to imbue power into the object. The dorsal fin is pierced for suspension and the eye, pectoral fin, and tail are inlaid with nacre shell. Orcas in Tlingit and Haida culture are believed to be ancestors and can assume the shape of humans and can walk on the land in disguise, and when humans drown, they transform into these whales. Such a pendant would not only show clan affiliation but would offer protection, the orca is also believed to protect travelers and guide them home when needed. Size: 3" L x 2.25" W (7.6 cm x 5.7 cm)
Provenance: private Brevard, North Carolina, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
