A French Psalter Leaf from a Book
A French Psalter Leaf from a Book of Hours 15th Century Provenance: Otto F. Ege Cleveland Ohio. Probably Northeastern France or Paris this is an original page or leaf from a medieval Psalter. The psalter was the principal book for private devotion before the development of books of hours in the thirteenth century. This psalter leaf follows the usual practice of dividing the Psalms according to the cycle in which they were recited at the matins and vespers over the course of the week every week in the secular medieval church. Hand illuminated with gold red and blue inks on vellum. Sight size 3-1/2"T x 2-1/4"W overall in frame 12-1/2"T x 11"W.
