Charles Wellington Boyle
Charles Wellington Boyle (American/Louisiana 1861-1925) "Bayou Boeuf Louisiana" oil on canvas signed lower left 16 1/4 in. x 24 1/4 in. in an ornate frame with artist and title label. Provenance: Purchased in the French Quarter in the 1940s; thence by descent to the present collector. Note: Charles Wellington Boyle (1861-1925) was raised in Lewisburg LA on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. He was active in New Orleans art circles from 1883 as a painter art teacher restorer and curator. His Louisiana landscapes are his best works and often prominently feature moss-laden live oak trees. The painterly view of Bayou Boeuf offered here depicts a wide canopy of these trees along the edge of the bayou where a man plies the water in a pirogue. Many Louisiana landscapes by a variety of 19th century artists are unidentified. It is unusual to have a specific location noted on this Boyle landscape. Bayou Boeuf is located in Lafourche Parish in the "German" territories of Southeast Louisiana just off Lac des Allemands near Kraemer.

LOUIS BOSA LARGE O/C PAINTING, WORKERS AT A RAILROADLouis Bosa (New York, Pennsylvania/Italy, 1905-1981) oil on canvas large genre painting depicting laborers working on a railroad, with rural landscape in the background under a cloudy blue sky. Signed "Bosa '46" lower right. Housed in a painted wood frame. Sight: 21 3/4" H x 27 1/2" W. Framed: 29" H x 35" W. Biography: Louis Bosa was born in Codroipo, Italy in 1905. In the 1930s and 40s the artist and his wife struggled financially, and his subject matter often included the laboring class in America, as in this work. His artistic career gained traction in the latter half of the 1940s, and throughout his life he became widely exhibited and respected as a teacher for the Art Students League, continuing to paint an array of genre, figure and landscape paintings, and eventually returning to Italy to paint urban and satirical scenes.
