NATIVE AMERICAN ARCHAIC TEXAS CHERTNATIVE AMERICAN ARCHAIC TEXAS CHERT CORNER TANG BLADENative American, United States, Texas / Northern Mexico, Late Archaic to Woodland, ca. 1000 BCE to 500 CE. A large hand-knapped bifacial chert knife or spear blade with an elliptical cross section known as a corner tang biface or knife. The blade is asymmetrical with a slightly curved spine and a notch to the basal corner, creating a stem for a wood handle to be hafted with. The unusual shape may have had a symbolic function, perhaps a burial item for the afterlife, rather than utilitarian. Size: 6" L x 2.25" W (15.2 cm x 5.7 cm)
