BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS SILK ON LINEN NEEDLEWORKBoston, Massachusetts silk on linen needlework memorial sampler , inscribed on eglomise mat Wrought at Mrs. Rowson's Academy by Miss Sophia Dudley 1815 , the tomb inscribed Sacred to the memory of Benjamin Dudley, obit March 16, 1814, et 21 , 21" x 19 1/2". In 1797, Susana Rowson left the theater world to found Mrs. Rowson's Academy for Young Ladies in downtown Boston and remained as head preceptress until 1822.
Condition:
Some losses to inscription on urn, otherwise very good condition.

FINE DIORAMA OF THE SS "CITY OF BOSTON"FINE DIORAMA OF THE SS "CITY OF BOSTON" , circa 1870s, a British iron-hulled single-screw passenger steamship of the Inman Line on her maiden voyage from Halifax, Nova Scotia for Liverpool heading into sea, passing a lighthouse with dory, smaller vessel passing by the stern and a small skiff with sailor.
The background decorated with vessels in the horizon, sea, sky and topography, harbor and dunes.
Overall 19 ½ in. x 32 ¼ in.
The City of Boston sailed from Halifax Nova Scotia for Liverpool January 28, 1870 commanded by Captain Halcrow. A violent gale and snowstorm took place two days after her departure and she never reached her destination and was never found. There were 191 people on board, including crew, prominent businessmen and military officers.

An early typed note verso states that the needlework descended in the family of Revolutionary War General Christian Febiger (1749-1796).
