Angel Botello Barro, Called Botello
Angel Botello Barro, Called Botello (Puerto Rico, 1913-1986) "Death and Transfiguration", 1952, oil on canvas, 26" x 25", signed and dated lower right "A. Botello Barro 52". Presented in the original frame. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist; descended in the family of a New Orleans Collector. Spanish-born artist Angel Botello studied in Bordeaux at L'Ecole des Beaux Artes and at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. He spent the majority of his career living and working in the Caribbean. In 1944, Botello moved to Haiti, where he remained for twelve years. He also spent time in the Dominican Republic as well as Puerto Rico where he later settled and opened his first gallery in 1955. The influence of the vitality and spirituality of island life in Botello's art is keenly evident in the movement, vibrant colors and mystical images of this rare early work.
