Marble Nude by Alfred Boucher
Marble Nude by Alfred Boucher Alfred Boucher (French 1850-1934) ?19th century. Marble depicting a carved nude emerging from the natural rock gazing upward signed in the marble A. Boucher;?ht. 19.75 in.Alfred Boucher rose from a humble upbringing into artistic fame. He studied sculpture under the tutelage of Joseph Marius Ramus (French 1805-1888) and Paul DuBois (French 1829-1905). Success came to Boucher quickly; at age twenty-four he began exhibiting in the Paris Salon and in 1881 he was awarded the Prix du Salon. His sensuous nudes in particular were met with critical acclaim for their life-like qualities. In his later years Boucher's work as a mentor to rising sculptors provided invaluable opportunity to female sculptresses such as Laure Coutan (French 1855-1914) and Camille Claudel (French 1864-1943) who were barred from study at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts based on their sex.? Boucher's desire to assist a new generation of sculptors continued throughout his life and in 1902 he founded the studio La Ruche in Montparnasse to aid such artists adding to his legacy as a leading artistic figure of the Academic?style of the?19th century. Property of Mary Murray Cincinnati Ohio Condition: Fine condition.
