8TH C. INDIAN PALA STONE RELIEF
8TH C. INDIAN PALA STONE RELIEF OF VISHNUSouth Asia, India, region of Bengal, Pala Empire, ca. 8th to 12th centuries CE. A beautiful relief and openwork carved stone plaque depicting the Hindu deity Vishnu. The god stands upon a deep shelf-like base, with diminutive pillars flanking his legs, likely representing simplified figures of devotees. He is depicted holding his traditional attributes in his 4 arms that help identify his character - although rendered with reduced details, one familiar with Vishnu and his implements can identify each: in his lower left hand is a conch shell, a mace in his right hand, the chakra or discus in his upper-left hand, and his forward-right hand is raised in a mudra gesture. Vishnu wears his characteristic conical headdress and a calf length skirt, while his visage is delineated with strong stylized features. Vishnu's head is framed by an aureole incised into the surrounding panel. Size: 2.3" L x 0.65" W x 4.375" H (5.8 cm x 1.7 cm x 11.1 cm)
Vishnu is a blue-skinned, four-armed deity central to Hinduism: the protector and preserver of the world to Brahma's creator and Shiva's destroyer. Temples in Pala were built of brick, with carved stone images like this one were often set into wall niches. The Pala Empire was the last major Buddhist power in India, although their sculptural art, as here, often includes Hindu elements and iconography. They are well known for their sculpture, which was influenced by the Gupta period, and in turn influenced artwork in Tibet, Nepal, and Southeast Asia.

12TH C. KHMER SANDSTONE BRAHMA HEAD
12TH C. KHMER SANDSTONE BRAHMA HEAD (4 FACES)**First Time At Auction**
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire, 12th to 13th century CE. A beautiful red sandstone sculpture of the deity, Brahma, carved to be viewed in the round with 4 faces encircling the conical mukuta headdress. He can be shown as multi-headed with sometimes 3 or 4 heads. These four faces are positioned to view all cardinal directions as a symbol of his omnipotence, and represent sacred knowledge from the 4 Vedas. Brahma is regarded as the creator of the world. Although a major god and highly regarded in Southeast Asia, he did not gain a wide cult worship and few temples are dedicated to Brahma, but statues and images of this god are often incorporated into architecture and art when depicting other Hindu gods. Brahma coexists alongside Buddhist practices and is regarded as protective god of a heavenly realm. Worshippers believe that each side offers a different blessing and generally leave an offering in front of each face. Size: 6" Diameter x 11" H (15.2 cm x 27.9 cm); 16.5" H (41.9 cm) on included custom
Khmer art shifted away from Indian styles in the 7th century CE to encompass its own framework; one example of this seen here is that this statue is carved in the round, rather than as a relief on a stela, which was common with Indian and Javanese Hindu and Buddhist sculptures that previously influenced Cambodian art. From this, we can infer that Khmer sculptors would have desired their artwork to be viewed from all sides, and thus placed in the center of temples rather than against a wall.
The famous Khmer temple, Bayon, built in the late 12th to 13th century in Angkor Thom, Cambodia, has distinctive 4-sided towers each carved with the face of Brahma - similar in style to this sandstone carving.

19TH C. INDIAN TAMIL NADU GOLD
19TH C. INDIAN TAMIL NADU GOLD THALI DOWRY PENDANTSouth Asia, southern India, Tamil Nadu and Keralal region, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely high-quality gold 84.07% (equivalent to 20K+) Thali pendant with a brass rim inserted into the suspension hole lip and strung on a modern cord as a wearable necklace. Thalis were presented by the parents of the bride or by the groom during the wedding and the gold became part of the bride's dowry and personal wealth. The design and style of the pendant indicated the caste or community the couple belonged to - the gold indicating a wealthy merchant class, and the pendant was believed to ensure fertility and protection. The word thali (tali) comes from the name of a palm tree, (talipot palm, Corypha umbraculifera), which the pointed ends on this pendant may resemble - and the 3 points also invoke the Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Size of pendant: 1.5" L x 0.75" W (3.8 cm x 1.9 cm); cord: 21" L (53.3 cm); gold quality: 84.07% (equivalent to 20K+); weight: 10.3 grams

RARE 17TH C. KHMER POST-ANGKOR HEAD
RARE 17TH C. KHMER POST-ANGKOR HEAD OF BRAHMASoutheast Asia, Cambodia, Post-Angkor period, ca. 17th century CE. A fabulous sandstone head of Brahma, the Hindu god associated with creation and knowledge, depicted with 4 faces representing the 4 Vedas, each pointed in a different cardinal direction. Crowned by a towering chignon incised with a lotus flower at the top, each visage presents generously-lidded eyes beneath a fine brow line, full lips gently turned up at the corners, and elongated ears adorned with heavy jewelry. Each displaying a subtle variation of expression, the faces appear quite content as they gaze outwards at the world they have created. After the decline of the Khmer empire, stone art production and monumental temple building became almost non-existent making this Post-Angkor head of Brahma a very rare example! Size: 7.8" W x 9.1" H (19.8 cm x 23.1 cm); 14.8" H (37.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Brahma is one of the three principle deities of the Hindu pantheon comprised of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Together these gods respectively represent the creative, preservative, and destructive energies. Brahma, who is regarded as the master of the universe, was the primeval male god who created the world and all forms of life.

9TH C. INDIAN STONE TEMPLE PANEL
9TH C. INDIAN STONE TEMPLE PANEL TRIMURTI & CONSORTSSouth Asia, India, Middle Kingdom period, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A high relief stone panel carving of the Brahmanical Triad, flanked by a female consort, possibly Saraswati, and smaller celestial attendants. The Brahmanical triad or Trimurti - the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva- are the sacred trinity representing the supreme deity of Hinduism - in which Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer/transformer are personified as a holy triad. Here the three faces are visible, one facing front and two in profile, framed by a lotus or rosette halo, and the four arms hold attributes of prayer beads and lotus flowers. This panel was once part of a temple or shrine and is wonderfully preserved with beautiful artistry! Size: 21" L x 5" W x 19.5" H (53.3 cm x 12.7 cm x 49.5 cm); 22.5" H (57.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The Trimurti, meaning 3 forms, is considered the trinity of supreme divinity in Hinduism, in which the cosmic functions of creation, maintenance, and destruction are personified as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, respectively. Starting in the 8th century CE, Hindus dedicated temples to the Trimurti - the most famous include the Baroli Trimurti Temple, the Elephanta Caves, the Mithrananthapuram Trimurti Temple, the Prambanan Trimurti Temple, Savadi Trimurti Temple, and Thripaya Trimurti Temple.
