2 WARREN BRANDT WORKS AND BOOKWarren Brandt (American/North Carolina, 1918-2002), drawing, etching and book. 1st item: Pencil drawing of a partially nude young woman, reclining on a chaise. Signed lower right. 11-1/2" x 9" sight, 15-1/2" x 18" matted and framed in plain whitewashed frame. 2nd item: Etching depicting 2 nude women, seated and talking to a bearded older man shown wearing a hat. Pencil signed lower right margin and numbered 2/20. 4-1/2" x 6" plate, 6" x 7" sight, 11-1/2" x 12" matted and framed in a green painted wood frame. Together with a hardback book titled "Painting with Oils" by Warren Brandt. Biography: Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Warren Brandt studied with Max Beckmann and Philip Guston, and had ties to the Abstract Expressionists in New York. He attended Pratt Institute, the Art Students League, and was an official Army portraitist during World War II. He taught at several universities and headed the Art Department at Salem College from 1949-1950. Provenance: the estate of Lucille Svitzer Brady (Mrs. Frank B. Brady), formerly of Annapolis, Maryland.

1st item: Wear to seat and rails. 2nd item: Split along top of box. General wear to decoration and wood, especially to corners. 3rd item: Some breaks to weavers in stool.

NAPKIN HOLDER, CIRCA 1930 enamelled metal, printed maker's marks19.6cm wide, 11cm highLiterature:The Times Magazine, 16 March 2002, p.51 Nest: A Quarterly of Interiors, Spring 2002, where this lot is illustrated in Andrew McIntosh Patrick's home at 34 Craven Street, near Trafalgar Square, London.Note: Marianne Brandt was a German painter, sculptor, photographer, metalsmith, and designer who studied at the Bauhaus art school in Weimar and later became head of the Bauhaus Metall-Werkstatt (Metal Workshop) in Dessau in 1928. She joined Ruppelwerk GmbH in Gotha in 1929 as head of the "design department for metal goods in coated steel panel". Besides making new designs, she was also in charge of revising the Ruppelwerk's artisan products. It was her declared goal to "bring the confusing and uncharming product range of the Ruppelwerk in line with the Bauhaus philosophy".
